In my Issues in Environmental Science course we talked about organic food. Before taking that course I heard very negative things about organic food, but never an explanation of why it is bad. I learned that organic food is more of the "old fashion" way of farming. Many organic farmers have different styles. We had an Organic farmer from Tallahassee, Florida speak to the class. Her farm uses a combination of horse manure, some sort of worm, soil, and wood chip to fertilize her fruits and vegetables. We also watched a film called Food INC (if you are a vegetarian or vegan, I advise you not to watch this film). From that film I learned a little more about the differences between organic and inorganic food. It showed that the fast food chain has changed the way our meat and vegetables are today. The fast food chain needs bigger meat! Today cattle are being fed a mixture made with corn that may increase levels of E-coli in the cattle. The cattle are not free to graze in open space and corn is not a part of their natural diet, if one cow is infected so will the others. Traditional farming has changed, these animals are being injected with just about any hormone, and Cases of E-Coli is becoming a problem. Before I went to college, I did not eat organic food. Now, I do not have a problem with organic food. A lot of people say that it is expensive, but I have bought it from places that are a lot cheaper. I think that organic food is smaller, but healthier. The only product I have not bought is Organic milk, but I am kind of afraid to buy it.
My question to everyone is, what do you think of Organic food? Why do you like or dislike it?
